A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
